Strengthening the Community Health Worker Workforce

IPHI is highly involved in policy initiatives to support the development, utilization, and financing of the community health worker (CHW) workforce.

In the District of Columbia, IPHI co-convenes with the DC Primary Care Association the DC Community Prevention and Medicaid Financing Task Force, which includes the CHW Workforce Development Workgroup.  In Virginia, we co-convene with the Virginia Department of Health the Virginia CHW Advisory Group and the CHW Policy Task Force.  Finally, in Maryland, IPHI CHW expert Dwyan Monroe is an appointed member of the Workgroup on Workforce Development for Community Health Workers.  Through these bodies, all three jurisdictions are involved in defining a CHW scope of practice, core competencies, and training requirements, and making recommendations related to CHW certification and the financing of preventive health services provided by CHWs, including through Medicaid.
