Housing Authority of Prince George’s County

IPHI and the Prince George’s County Housing Authority work together to make public housing units and residences smoke free.

The Housing Authority of Prince Georges County was awarded a mini-grant under IPHI’s Community Transformation Grant to design a no-smoking policy and work plan for implementation in all of the County’s public housing units and residences. IPHI assisted the Housing Authority in the development and implementation of its community discussions, providing technical assistance in evaluation, and providing promising practices and resources on no-smoking policies.

The no-smoking policy is part of the Housing Authority’s Health and Wellness Initiative that aims to promote health and wellness and provide a wide range of services to help public housing clients, while seeking to reduce health disparities and expand access to care and treatment.

Residents were engaged in the process by way of surveys and a series of community forums that assisted in the formation of the impending policy.  The results of this survey, community forums, and other information will ultimately be used in an effort to enhance the overall health of the residents and increase their access to available health care services.
